About DAR

What is DAR?

Founded in 1890, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women's service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. But it is their common bond, their lineal descent from patriots of the American Revolution, which unites them.

When you join DAR, you become part of a network of more than 185,000 vibrant, active members in 3,000 chapters across the world. They include First Ladies and firsts in their field, actresses and adventurers, artists and authors, doctors and nurses, educators and engineers, and even pioneers in space. While their accomplishments are as diverse as their professions, all of them share a sense of purpose and pride while forming lifelong bonds and honoring their revolutionary ancestors.

What do DAR members do?

The grassroots work of local chapters promotes the organization's objectives of historic preservation, education and patriotism. In communities across the country and around the world, DAR members support these ideals through participation in:

  • Restoring and maintaining historic sites
  • Preserving historical records and artifacts
  • Locating, restoring and marking American Revolutionary War patriot grave sites and headstones
  • Supporting schools, awarding scholarships and recognizing outstanding students throughout the country
  • Promoting education and citizenship through youth programs
  • Sponsoring American history essay contests for students
  • Volunteering to assist military veterans
  • Supporting America’s active-duty troops through a variety of programs
  • Sponsoring special programs that promote the constitution
  • Welcoming new citizens at naturalization ceremonies
